VENEH, set in a typical Karelian village of the early 20th century, is a poetic description of transition. In the story a young girl becomes a bride and prepares to leave home. The film breathes life into the Karelian landscape familiar from I.K Inha’s iconic black&white photos. It is the first film ever made in the Karelian language. In 2017, a year after its premier,  Veneh won the best Finnish short film award at the Scandinavian International Film Festival. Before the screening of this film North Karelian flutist Johanna Kärkkäinen will perform some traditional Karelian melodies.

Jaana Laasonen, one of Finland’s most acclaimed flute pedagogues, presents about the art of group teaching and how to make it fun and collaborative with a variety of games and exercises for young flutists. The class will be held in Finnish.

LINDU depicts the mythology and traditions related to death in the Karelian tradition. The story follows the preparation for a burial in a Soviet Karelian village around the 1960s, where traditions are still present and passed on through the rituals performed by the mother. The flute plays a large role, played by flutist Robert Tobin, and is central throughout the film. It was decided to vary the colour and pitch in the different areas of the film so three different flutes were used. Firstly an ivory headed 19th century simple system flute, secondly a modern Boehm flute and lastly a wooden baroque flute.
