Some endured time in concentration camps, while others were forced to flee their homes, lost loved ones, or faced punishment for their efforts to resist oppression. A vast repertoire for the flute exists from this era, much of which was prohibited and remained unrecognized until years later. These solo flute pieces are composed through the lens of the unimaginable circumstances surrounding and following the war. Through performances of solo flute works complemented by lecture, “Forbidden Fantasies” aims to showcase underrepresented composers and the suppressed music of this era. The presentation is led by Lucy Rubin, who is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, under the guidance of Linda Chesis.

Lecture “The Timeless Voice of the Quena Flute”: Marcelo chacur politano

This lecture offers an enlightening exploration of the convergence between folk traditions and contemporary classical composition through the lens of the quena, an Andean flute rich in cultural heritage. Led by Marcelo Chacur Politano, a lecturer at the Sibelius Academy of Music and the Estonian Academy of Music, the session will delve into his work “Yaraví” for solo quena, which reimagines the traditional lament genre while expanding the instrument’s expressive capabilities through innovative techniques such as multiphonics, bisbigliando, and unconventional registral contrasts. Participants will discover how the quena serves as a bridge between inherited traditions and contemporary sonic landscapes, illustrating how the concept of “fantasy” functions not only as an aesthetic principle but also as a transformative force within music.
